Hi Lee, Spyware is a nuisance and can slow down down your operating system but it's not going to have much of an effect on your ping times. Viruses are also similar as in they normally effect the stability of your operating system not your network connection. I think the BY advisor may have not known the difference between a virus and a 'worm' which does affect your network connection, as worms autonomously spread themselves over a network/internet connection until your connection is saturated. You would see higher ping times and bad PC performance if your PC was infected with a worm. You might want to have a quick read of this post where I gave some advice on ping times on DSL vs Cable and why they can be different. An acceptible ping time to BBC on a BY connection is usually about 15-35ms so 50-150ms is a problem and should be investigated, just make sure your PC is spyware & virus free so you can't be fobbed off again. BY support can do what's called a DOCSIS ping which will check the modem's external connection across the cable network, thus cutting out the possibilty of a PC problem. Did the BY advisor take you through checking the cable modem's power levels & SNR? Or did he go through performing a traceroute with you? He should have... standard practice for dodgy ping times, you may have just been unlucky and got a n00b on the phone.
