Hi Vin,
An virus alert message has appeared on my brothers computer informing him that download.trojan has infected a file on his computer.
We have scanned the system using Norton but it cannot quarantine or delete the file.
We have then followed the steps given by symantec ie. disable system restore, start in safe mode, perform scan, tried to delete file and then tried to delete manually from its location in windows explorer.
When we actually find the file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll we try to delete and it says that it is unable to delete due to the file being in use by another program.
We are using windows xp home edition.
is there anyting else we can try to get rid of this problem?
thanking you in advance
Gareth.

Hi Gareth,
First thing I would suggest is to use a different virus scanner.
On NHH's front page, goto 'Online virus Scan' on the 'Quick Links' menu and have a bash at 'Trend Micro Housecall' with system restore disabled.
If all fails, uninstall Norton and install another AV program such as Avast or AVG from the downloads page. Avast has a 'boot-time scan' feature which can scan for viruses on boot-up before windows has a chance to load and lock files.
Note: It's not wise to have more than one AV program installed so you must uninstall Norton first before installing another AV program.

Thanks for that Vin.
We ended up running Avast on boot-up and now it seems (touch wood) that we have cleared the virus.
