When I installed my memory it registered as 1024 but lately it is showing as 992 MB. The system properties show 992 and so does CCleaner when it checks out your PCs configuration. Where has the rest gone? If the memory stick itself was broken would it register at all? Wouldnt it just show as 512 if it indeed booted up at all? Its really got me confused. Any ideas? Also can you maybe recommend any memory utilities to help the pc speed up. Do any of them work?

Sounds strange but more often than not the problem will be with the RAM or the way it's seated in the slots. Try running the PC just using one memory strip at a time and have a look at the results. Sometimes even just reseating the memory in the slots may fix your problem. This could've also contributed to the recent performance problems you where having.
If when you're just running the PC on one memory bank you still get a false reading with one particular memory strip then it has a problem. If it's new, enquire with who you bought it from, they'll usually do an exchange within a certain period.
If all is OK when testing the individual memory strips but you still get the problem all strips are put back in then there'll be an incompatablilty between different types or makes of memory that you're using. Although I kinda doubt this as it has worked OK before
