Corrupt Winsock2 Fix for Windows XP & 2000
When you try to renew your IP address using ipconfig/renew in Windows XP or 2000,
you may receive an error message stating "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket."
Click here to download the Winsock fix tool, then run it on the affected PC to fix the problem.
To manually fix the problem using regedit, follow the steps below.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- In Registry Editor, double click on the following to navigate to the 'Winsock' keys...
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- System
- CurrentControlSet
- Services
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
[/li][li]Right-click Winsock2, click Delete, and then click Yes.
[/li][li]Close Regedit[/li][/ul]
... Then if you're using Windows XP do the following;
- Click on the Start button, click on Run
- Type cmd into the Open box and press the Enter key.
- In the 'Command Prompt' screen type 'netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt' and press the Enter key
- Now restart your computer
...Or if you're using Windows 2000 then do the following;
- Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel
- Open Network and Dial-Up Connections
- Right-click Local Area Connection and press Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and press the Uninstall button.
- After uninstalling TCP/IP, shutdown and restart your computer
- Go back to Control Panel / Network and Dial-up Connections
- Right-click Local Area Connection and press Properties.
- If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not there then you need to reinstall it.....
- Press the Install button
- Select Protocol and click on the Add button
- Select Microsoft on the left
- Select TCP/IP on the right
- Click OK
- Press the Install button
- Now restart your computer
The problem will now be fixed.
