Hi Shirley, Sorry I took a while to get onto your post... Regarding your query, one of my favorite techy sites PCStats.com has just finished their Beginners Guide to Home Networking & File Sharing. Networking isn't plug & go, you have to configure everything on the network to do what you want it to do so read the guide at PCStats Regarding hardware, there are many ways of sharing your connection but the most straight forward ways would be.... - Low Cost Option: You could connect your Cable or ADSL modem via the USB connection and connect the laptop to the main PC via an ethernet connection, Then setup Internet Connection Sharing on the main PC to share out the internet to the laptop.
This way the main PC has to be switched on in order for the laptop to be able to use the internet. Hardware Needed: 1 Crossover ethernet cable, an ethernet adapter in each PC (which are usually already built in nowadays), and the modem connected via USB.
- Best Option: Get hold of a broadband router which is a bit of hardware that you can connect your PC's to via ethernet and your Modem (also via ethernet, the modem must have an ethernet port). When properly configured a router will share the connection between multiple PC's simultaneously.
Hardware Needed: 1 Broadband router, 3 ethernet cables and ethernet ports on each PC & the modem.
Hope that helps Shirley....
