I have an application in c:/windows/system32, blueyonder told me it was a virus but a couple of people have told me it's a running windows programme and is harmless. What is it?

LSASS.EXE is a part of Windows. It's a component that deals with security & login policies. It is not a virus. There is a worm though that can cause LSASS to shut down your PC called the 'Sasser' worm.
