can i install a genuine copy of xp to my computer, cos i,m getting problems with 1 that my friend installed which i did,nt know was dodgy???

Using a pirate version of Windows XP wouldn't necessarily make things less stable or cause problems, you just won't be able to update it with the latest service packs. If the problems you're having is related to actual OS problems then you'll have to address those as a separate issue. If your problems consist of not being able to update Windows then get you're legitimate Windows CD key and follow the instructions HERE on how to change the Windows CD Key

thanks but i have already bought a gen version of xp, will it over-ride the other one, surely i don,t have to format my pc, do I

As I said, to make you current installation legitimate, you can change the CD Key. When you buy a copy of Windows you are actually paying for the licence & product key, not necessarily the disk. Anyway if you want to go through the install again, just insert the CD while Windows is already running and you'll get this, then carry on following the prompts to reinstall/upgrade Windows
