I downloaded something the other day and as soon as it started Avast went barmy. It detected a virus but couldn't move it to chest. Then Startup Mechanic brought uo the folowing warning "Winsock 2 driver has registered the executable MMTASK10.EXE to start at startup - do you wish to allow this change" If you select NO it just asks again 10 seconds later - all day, so I selected YES and then performed a thorough scan with Avast - it didn't find anything. I downloaded your Winsock Fix and ran that, that didn't alter thigs either. I tried the manual instructions you suggested but when you type in "regedit" the page opens for a second and then shuts down - the same happens if you open the Task Manager - it flicks open for a second, minimises to the system tray and disappears again as soon as you move the curser over it. It seems to be a worm/virus/trojan of some sort but Avast didn't find it which is a new one on me. I'm running Windows XP with SP2 - can you help

MMTASK is rogue dialer malware, try scanning your system with Microsoft's AntiSpyware, Spybot or Ad-Aware all available from the downloads page, remember to update the software before scanning.
Good Luck

Cheers mate - I had run Adaware and spybot both after updating with no joy but yet again you got it right microsoft. Although it didn't remove it completely it did give me access to the task manager again and MMTASK10.EXE was alive and well and Startup Mechanic was still seeing Winsock driver2. So I manually deleated the Winsock folders from the registry and after a quick fix with the Winsock tool and a couple of reboots later all is well again. Once again CHEERS MATE ;D
