Hi I am having a real problem in shutting down my pc. When I try to shutdown it gets as far as the closing screen and then freezes after which I have to manually hold in the start/stop button. Any ideas ?

Hi Stroaky, Shutdown problems in Windows XP is a relatively common affair and can be caused by various issues. The cause of your problem would depend on your Windows configuration. - What service pack is installed?
- Has the problem only started occuring recently?
- Has there been any hardware changes recently?
This problem was very common with Windows XP SP1, updating Windows to SP1a or SP2 should resolve the issue if you haven't updated Windows from SP1. ACPI (power management) is another issue that can cause shutdown problems this is most likely to occur either from a Windows installaion not detecting ACPI when installed or if there has been a significant hardware change. Before I go into that though, I'd need more details about your system & version of Windows including service pack (hold the 'windows key' and press the 'Pause/Break' key to find out). Also here's a couple of links that cover the issue: James Eshelman's SiteMicrosoft Knowledge Base----------------------------------- BTW, thanks for the comments
