Hello, my HPpavillion zv5383ea notebook, windows XP, has been hijacked, tried all previous spyware removal etc. to no avail, now various quick launch buttons etc are refusing to work. How do I restore this back to new. I cannot use system restore as I turned it all off whist trying to get debugged. I have 2 disks for driver recovery, 1 application recovery disk and operating system cd. Which order do I put them in to put this lap top back to it's original state. All files required have been backed up to disc. There are no instructions as to how to use the cd's. Please help, thank you

Hi Spikecas.. First of all, if your main concern is to get your quick buttons working, why not re-install the HP quick button software available at the HP website HERE. Also, you haven't mentioned what is happening to make you think that malicious software is resident on your system, have you tried virus scanning your system with Housecall before scanning your system for spyware? Also your operating system CD... is it a Windows CD or a Windows Recovery CD? If it's a proper Windows CD you can repair Windows the windows setup way or by using the Windows system file checker.

Thank you. Housecall, found trojan.swizzor,ej but couldn't remove. My IE has been hijacked and I have tried all methods you have advised others to use to clear it to no avail. Microsoft beta-1 finds omegasearch c2media ltd in a registry key. Everytime I clear these, they return. I am not too advanced in comp. use. All the operating system cd says is microsoft windows xp home sp1 for software reinstallation and repair only.

Good stuff... The reason why the omegasearch malware is coming back is because the trojan that's resident on your system, detcts whether the omegasearch malware is there and downloads it again if omegasearch is removed. So firstly you need to remove the trojan, there'll be a many ways you can do this but I'll go through the what I think will be the least technical route. Once the trojan has been removed, scan your system with your anti-spyware software and remove the omegasearch spyware. With the trojan gone, the omegasearch will not come back when removed. Bosh!... System repaired without reinstalling Windows or wiping your hard disk which is all your Windows restore CD will do (which is something your shopuld never have to do to fix a minor Windows problem). Now you can reinstall your HP Quick-Button software as mentioned in my last post. Good Luck and in future, be careful what you install on your PC. Omegasearch is most commonly bundled with a MSN Messenger addon program called Messenger Plus... Beware.

Vin, thanks for your advice and easy instructions, however Avast would not load in, and then the whole system crashed completely. Ended up having a total re format. Will definately give messenger plus a miss. Next time if I get a problem I shall come to you straight away and not let it grow. Have fun and enjoy, Sara
